Chapter Sixteen

PENNY

I was nervous. Like, really nervous. This was my first date with Lucas Abbott, and I wanted it to go well. Lucas Abbott. I really needed to stop referring to him by his full name in my mind, like he was a celebrity or something. But he’d always seemed like that to me—popular and unobtainable.

But now, I was sitting in his car, holding his hand, heading toward some secret—hopefully romantic—location. I felt as giddy as that young freshman girl on the day Lucas successfully completed a chemistry experiment and wrapped his arm around my shoulders, pulling me into his side.

“We did it, Freckles!” he had said.

I was lost after that.

And now, he liked me. He actually liked me. He’d kissed me. And that kiss had blown any expectations I had of what it would be like to kiss him right out of the water. It was everything I never even knew I wanted in a kiss. Sweet and tender with a side of passion. Yes, please.

But I couldn’t help but worry about what might go wrong on this date. Because no matter how many times my friends or my mom told me all our dating disasters were just coincidences, I still feared we’d jinxed ourselves the moment we signed that pact. Now that I finally had my chance with Lucas, I hoped and prayed they were right.

The latest song by Cooper Mason came on the radio. His songs were sweet and charming but had a soulful way about them. This one was about the girl he left behind, and I thought of Ellie. Not that they’d ever been more than friends, but sometimes I wondered if she might’ve been the inspiration for any of his songs.

“Hey, I know this guy, Cooper Mason,” Lucas said. “He went to our high school.”

“Yeah, he’s an old friend of mine.”

“An old friend?” His eyebrow lifted. “Should I be jealous?”

I chuckled. “Only a friend. No jealousy necessary.”

“Good.” His smile made me weak in the knees, and I was thankful to be seated.

“If I had said Cooper and I used to date, would you have been jealous?”

“Heck, yeah, I would have. Just like I was with you and Cody.”

“Cody?”

“Cody Cunningham,” he replied.

“Cody Cunningham?” His name came out at a higher decibel level than I meant it to. “Me and Cody?”

“Yeah.”

“Ewww, no. Cody is a sleaze. He used to date Jessa and was a huge jerk to her. Why … why would you ever think I was involved with him?”

“Brea saw you two together. She said you were hugging and stuff.”

I rolled my eyes and explained how I fell on Cody that day. “I tried to get out of that as quickly as possible, and she just happened to walk in. There was absolutely nothing going on.”

“Sorry. I shouldn’t have listened to her. She knows how to get under my skin.”

“It’s okay. Just a misunderstanding.” I shivered at the thought.

“Another reason dating away from town is a good idea. Brea won’t be in our business.”

I nodded. I was in no hurry for a replay of the night she confronted me in the restroom.
